Foolish Things Christians Believe: My Death Is Not Final day 1

Life After Death
Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. Romans 6:3–5 NLT

People of Jesus’ day had different opinions about life after death, just as people do today. Some felt that when you’re dead, you’re dead. This physical-in-the-body-life is all there is. Some felt people were really spirit based and that spirit goes beyond the grave, without the prison of the frail and inferior body. It was and is for some a great debate, ultimately unprovable.

Jesus’ death and resurrection ends the debate. He proves that we are physical and spiritual creations of God, who has intentions for us both now and beyond the grave.

We don’t have to prove death. It’s a universal problem. “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.” Romans 5:12 (NLT) Jesus’ selfless entrance into death is God’s solution to the problem.

His unity with us in death means we also have unity with him in resurrection… an eternal, beyond death definition of life.

If Jesus is the one who proves life after death, perhaps we should listen to what he has to say on the subject. Reflect on his words and consider how they form a foundation of truth for your life. “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.” John 5:24 (NLT)
