In the ancient world, life was centered around the household and three key relationships: husbands and wives, parents and children, and masters and slaves. There was often a power dynamic in each, with the first person in each relationship wielding the power. But Paul says, among Christians, these relationships are entirely transformed. They are each to be characterized by mutual submission to one another. In this way, we point one another to Jesus. And in the same, we are called to live out this calling in our marriages, families, and workplaces. In doing so, we demonstrate to the world how Christ has the power to redeem, renew, and restore even our most intimate relationships.
