The Passover Lamb

April 7, 2019 Speaker: Mark Schulz Series: Before Calvary

Passage: Exodus 12:1–12:13, Mark 14:12–14:25, Revelation 7:13–7:17

In the Exodus the Passover marks the night of the tenth and final plague: the terrifying death of the firstborn. And yet, within this story we learn the surprising truth that God passes us over because the blood of another is poured out for us. You see, up to this point God made a distinction between the people of Israel and the people of Egypt. But here, now, God tells the Israelites and all the people of Egypt that they are in danger. Why? Because the LORD himself is about to pass through the land, and in His presence no one can stand. We all come before Him guilty. And yet, God promises salvation. He tells the people that the blood of a lamb will cover them and that death will pass them over. This story looks ahead to the day when God will once more pass us over because of the blood of a Lamb: His perfect Son whose blood would be poured out for us for the forgiveness of all our sins. Through his blood we are sheltered from judgment.
