Jesus says in the last chapter of Matthew, “All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” [Matthew 28:18-19]
In the last chapter of Mark, he promises, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” [Matt 28:18b-19; Mark 16:16a]
In baptism, God frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of Jesus [Romans 6:1-4]. By water and the Holy Spirit we are born again as children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ.
The benefits of baptism are profound and eternal:
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” [Acts 2:38-39]
OPPORTUNITIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- To raise our children in community with God’s people in its various forms;
- Bring our children to hear the Word of God and experience Communion regularly;
- Teach our children how to grow in the church’s core values: worshiping God, connecting with others in small group, serving others, leading and being lead, sharing our faith, being generous, and living accountable lives;
- Read the Bible with our children often, teaching them to read it for themselves; and
- Nurture our children in the faith through prayer.
P: (PARENTS), do you promise to help your child grow in the Christian faith and life? If so answer, “I do, with God’s help.”
P: (SPONSORS), do you promise to nurture this child in the Christian faith and help him/her live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? If so answer, “we do, with God’s help.”
P: (CHURCH), do you promise to support this child and pray for him/her as he/she lives a new life in Christ? If so answer “we do, with God’s help.”
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
