Trinity Galewood has had a partnership with Joseph Lovett Elementary, a Chicago Public School located on the same block as the church, for nearly three years. Over this past year our site has taken another step in deepening that partnership by offering after school programming on Wednesdays using a curriculum called Crossroads, which has a mission to mobilize people to share the Good News in public schools through church-led clubs and connecting children and families to the life of a local church in their community so that they might experience the abundant life that Jesus promised.
Throughout the school year, Trinity Galewood has led clubs every Wednesday, which included time to play basketball, big group games, a snack, a Bible teaching, and small groups. This club was led by current students at Concordia University Chicago, and we averaged forty students at each club. It was a year filled with building relationships and providing a safe space for students to hear more about a God who loves them so much.
Trinity Galewood will be a host location to another unique opportunity this summer as we host the One Summer Chicago Program through the city of Chicago. This will be the second year that we will have twenty students from the city of Chicago, most from Joseph Lovett Elementary, and will participate in a six week program that intends to deepen their dreams. Students will get to meet people who are working in areas that could potentially be career opportunities for them as well as learn skills in financial literacy and complete various community service projects. Students will be compensated through the One Summer Chicago grant. To be clear, this is costing the church nothing, as the One Summer Chicago program is in partnership with another organization, West Care, and we get to host this amazing opportunity. This is an incredible opportunity for our site to again be in partnership with community organizations and once again exhibit what it means to look, live, and love more like Jesus as we impact the community in which God has placed us.
